This is the fifth book in this series and with each new one JT Sawyer manages to improve upon the overall storyline and character arc of Mitch Kearns. This book takes us back in time to Mitch’s years in the army. Taking place on a stateside training mission, it gives us a glimpse into the rigors or spec ops training that have shaped the Mitch we’ve come to know and cheer for.The book may not have as many action scenes as previous novels in the series but I found the pacing matched the descriptions of what the main character was facing. Survival situations (even those simulated for training purposes) involve a lot of time to take in ones surroundings and to think about the contrast between life in a wilderness environment versus our artificial habitats in which we live our day to day lives. I’d say this feeling was captured perfectly.
If you appreciate bushcraft and tracking the scenes involving those skills will be rewarding. Also, this book raises awareness of the issue of illegal poaching and the black market on animals. The issues of rhinoceros and elephant poaching in Africa is normally what we think of when considering this issue but Sawyer shows us that it is also a domestic issue. He’s done his research in this area.
A fast and great read that continues to flesh out the main character in this enjoyable series. I am looking foreword to the next window into Mitch’s adventures.

Once again another badass read. Looking forward to more
Great to go back to the beginning and learn the origins of Mitch & Marco.
And to discover the different trainings they went through.
Enjoyable story, I look forward to reading more from this Author. It was quite the quick read, I only wish it was a bit longer.
Expert writing and story telling. Great characters and scenarios, makes me want to learn bushcraft and go camping! LOL, without the bad guys lurking around and poaching.
Sometimes things get a little Navarre on the woods. Had a few episodes myself, but never with bear poaching. Wild animals have a hard enough time with legal hunters and the elements without having to deal with the illegal poachers.
